Path of Exile Item Upgrades The performance of a variety of Path of Exile items can be enhanced by upgrading their performance. However you can only swap out the jewels in an equipment piece only once. It is common to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. The jewels also improve performance and create a surface harder than steel so that repeated friction from pivots do not cause damage to them. Universal upgrades offer smaller bonuses and can be placed in any type of equipment, while jewelry cannot be changed or upgraded and is only compatible with specific types of trinkets. These trinkets can provide additional bonuses and abilities that are active even when the hero isn't in combat. This allows a hero to become more efficient even when not in combat. It also helps compensate for the lack of a good team or talent tree slots that are normally filled by a hero's top stats.
